I wrote this letter to Anderson Cooper's people via their website. I am not sure if it was accepted at all. It wouldn't tell me. So here it is.
I liked the Guatamala Adoption Show. In my opinion, that adoption agency came off as very corrupt. Thank you. You alluded to maybe a second part to the series. The average cost of an adoption is about $50,000 unless you luck out like a coworker of mine who paid out $7,000. So where does all that money go? If 7,000 covers homestudy fees and attorney fees, where does the rest go? It is supposed to be non profit. That sure seems like a lot of profit to me. That is motivation to coerce lie and deceive women into relinquishing their children.
Recently Gladney did a infomercial on adoption. Watching it was heartbreaking for me as an adoptee. There was one young girl who had to have a c-section. Most mothers are in the hospital for four days. After two days, once they had her baby, she was booted out.
I am sure you have heard about Allison Quets. There are tons of stories like that. In particular, three fathers and one adoption agency, Adoption Center of Choice. These fathers wanted to raise their children. Cody O'Dea, one father out of Wyoming, registered on the Wyoming Putative Father registry. This agency checked it. There is proof of this as well. Because the mother left the state of Wyoming for Utah, he wasn't registered on Utah's registry. Now he is in the fight of his life to regain his child. Brynden Ayre, Indiana father, also fighting the same agency. His girlfriend, mother of two children, didn't want anymore. She threatened to dump his baby girl. She couldn't put the baby up for adoption in Indiana because he was registered there. She tried it here in Texas but he was registered here too. She then went to Utah. The same thing happened to him as it did to Cody O'Dea. In comes Joseph Simmerson. He was residing in Florida. Same scenerio. First Florida, then Georgia and then to Utah. This agency was banned from collecting women out of Illinois by the State Attorney General's office. They can't even advertise in the state of Illinois. This agency has a long history of doing this to the men and women. They are vultures waiting for their prey.
Stephanie Bennett is another story. She was sixteen when she got pregnant. She and her family were doing fine. Under the surface though another issue was preying on her mind. She had the father threatening her life, the baby's life as well as her family if she ever told who the father was. He was an adult family friend. He is now facing charges. She was clearly under duress. She goes to her high school counselor to check into a schedule change. Adoption comes up. He hands her an adoption pamphlet. An agency that is co-owned by the assistent school superintendent. This person has since resigned. The next day the agency, A Child's Hope, appears at the school. They advise Stephanie to run away from home to prevent her parents from interferring. This girl had no birth certificate. No proof that the child was hers. The agency took the baby. The Bennetts have been fighting to get Evelyn, Stephanie's Child back for two years now. The agency is under investigation for performing illegal adoptions. This agency advise the adoptive parents to leave the state of Ohio. The courts have dragged their feet on this. The agency and the adoptive parents have repeatedly ignored the judges' orders to bring the child to court.
Recently another case came up that stunned me. Melanie Addington, an adoptive parent in Iowa, adopted a child out of Indiana through a private agency. She shook that baby boy, two months old, and slammed him into the wall. I posted the story of this on my blog and wrote the Indiana legislators about it. I have been advocating adoptee access and family preservation for two years now. This baby will be permanently brain damaged and shuffled into the foster care system. Something I am absolutely sure that his natural parents did not want. Have those parents even be told? I never heard back from the state legislators from Indiana.
The list goes on. If the US ever signs the Hague Convention, they have to open adoption records to adoptees in this country. It is a requirement. Will it ever happen? I honestly don't know. I also think that the reason why adoption agencies want those records to remain sealed is because of they did to my natural mother and the millions like her. I know from another mother a year later that more than likely my mother was tied to her bed. Not allowed to touch her stomach or touch me. She was knocked out so that she could not even see me. They fed them three sparse meals. No snacks. These were pregnant women. They don't want their adoptees to find out this information. They don't want the adoptive parents to find out because they would demand ethical treatment of mothers.
I am asking you to dig deeper. If I can find this information on the internet and can verify it with numerous sources, then so can you. I know that you are busy. This is a critical issue for me, millions of adoptees, and our parents. We want you to take it further. We want you to make adoption honest. It is a 6.7 billion dollar business worldwide.
